Truces

Truces will automatically go into place at the conclusion of a war. They do not work as one might expect, and thus it’s worth establishing exactly what they do.

Truces are displayed in the box immediately below a ruler’s portrait in any province in their demesne. This is the same box where the ‘At War’ and ‘Hostile’ icons are displayed. The truce icon features a dove on a blue banner, below the Coat of Arms of the territory that the portraited character has a truce with. In the below picture, the King of Aragon has truces with the Sheik of Sardinia and the Duke of Toulouse.

A truce imposed on the attacking King of Aragon.

At the end of every war, a truce is imposed on the attacking character (and only the attacker) for a period of ten years, during which he will pay a heavy penalty if he chooses to attack the defending character again.

The penalty for attacking during an active truce is spelled out for you before you can declare war.

However…:

  • If you die, the truce dies with you. Your heir may pick up where you left off. The truce is annulled.
  • If the leader of the realm you attacked dies. You may pick up where you left off. The truce is annulled.
  • If you are called to war as an ally of the attacker, you are not subject to the truce. You may independently declare war on the same realm, even immediately after your ally has trashed their levies leaving them defenseless, assuming you have a casus belli to do so. You may even call that same ally to assist you.
  • If you are called to war as a vassal of the attacker, you are not subject to the truce. You may independently declare war on the same realm, even immediately after your liege has trashed their levies leaving them defenseless, assuming you have a casus belli to do so.
  • If you are attacked and survive, you are not subject to any truce. You may immediately attack in reprisal, assuming you have a casus belli to do so.

Truce Expiration

When a Truce is about to expire (2 months out i think), you will get an alert icon to let you know. The tooltip for the icon will indicate whom the truce is with, as well as count down the days until you can attack them again without any penalties. Happy hunting!

In 56 days, Sultan Tamim is in big trouble.

Annoy your friends and family!
